This garden project – developed in close collaboration with the landscaper and our longstanding client – was an exciting challenge due to the property’s steeply sloping site. We led the planting design and worked closely with the client to refine the layout and material palette, ensuring the garden felt cohesive and sympathetic to the character of the house.

The result evokes the atmosphere of an Italian terrace, with planting thoughtfully adapted to suit our far less Mediterranean climate

Planting

Where possible, existing plants were carefully lifted and relocated, preserving the established character of the garden. Other areas were redesigned with entirely new planting schemes tailored to the site’s exposed, drought-prone conditions. Perovskia, Gaura, and Salvias bring a soft, loose, blousey quality, while Roses and Wisteria introduce a more classic, romantic feel through the planting.

To create vertical interest, we incorporated Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’, a widely planted ornamental pear prized for its profuse white spring blossom and vibrant autumn colour. These trees help to frame the garden and anchor it within the broader landscape.
